Build My Tech Stack: what a small team's software should cost

A tech stack is not a list of the best tools. It is a set of choices that have to work together, inside a budget, for a team of a particular size.

Advertising disclosure. We earn a commission when you sign up or buy through some of the links on this page. This never changes the price you pay, and it never affects our ratings or which tools we recommend.

Most advice ignores the budget part. This site starts there.

What is here now

A stack budget calculator. Add up what you are paying every month across every subscription, and see it per person and per year. Most people are surprised by their own total, which is the point.

Guides on building a stack, rather than reviews of individual products. What a team of five actually needs, what can wait, and how to avoid buying four tools that each do a fifth of the same job.

What is not here yet

No product recommendations. We have not tested anything, and a ranked list assembled from other people's blog posts would not help you choose.

When specific tools appear here, each will carry the date its price was checked and a link to the vendor's own page.

How we will make money

Some links will earn a commission when you sign up. They will be marked, they will not change your price, and they will not decide what we recommend or in what order.

US Federal Trade Commission guidance on digital advertising is clear that a disclosure has to sit close to the claim it relates to and be prominent enough that people actually notice it. That is why the notice appears in the footer of every page here rather than buried on a terms page.

The one piece of advice worth giving now

The most expensive thing in most small-business software budgets is not any single tool. It is the four subscriptions nobody has opened since the person who set them up left. Start there, before you buy anything new.
